How to Start Tracking Your Expenses (and Keep Doing It)
Updated · 4 min read
Most people do not overspend on big things. Money disappears in small, forgotten purchases. Tracking makes them visible, and visible spending is easier to change.
A five-step routine
- Pick a few categories you will actually use — about eight is plenty. You can always split them later.
- Add your accounts: cash, bank, mobile wallet. Seeing balances in one place is half the value.
- Log each purchase when it happens. It takes seconds; waiting until evening is how entries get forgotten.
- Review once a week for five minutes. Look at the category chart, not individual rows.
- Pick one change per month, such as eating out less, and watch the chart move.
Make logging effortless
- Use quick add inside the app, or send a message to the Telegram bot.
- Import past data from a CSV so you start with history instead of a blank page.
- Attach a receipt photo when it matters, such as warranties or reimbursements.
Tip: If you miss a few days, do not restart. Add what you remember and keep going. A rough record beats none.
