How to Budget on an Irregular Income (Freelancers and Gig Workers)
Updated · 4 min read
When income changes every month, a normal budget breaks the first time a client pays late. The fix is to budget from what you can count on, not from your best month.
A four-step method
- Look back over the last six to twelve months and find your lowest income. Treat that as your baseline.
- Build the budget for needs and minimum savings on the baseline only.
- Keep a buffer: save until you hold one to three months of baseline expenses in a separate account.
- In a better month, split the extra on a fixed rule, for example half to the buffer or goals and half to wants.
Track it in SpendFlow
- Use a separate account for the buffer so it never mixes with spending money.
- Record every payment as income when it arrives, with a note naming the client.
- Use the monthly overview to see your real lowest and highest months and adjust the baseline.
Tip: Pay yourself a steady amount from the buffer account each month. It turns uneven income into something that feels like a salary.
