The 50/30/20 Budget Rule: A Simple Way to Split Your Income
Updated · 4 min read
The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point for people who find detailed budgets tiring. You split your after-tax income into three buckets and check them once a month.
The three buckets
- 50% needs — rent, utilities, groceries, transport, minimum debt payments.
- 30% wants — eating out, subscriptions, hobbies, trips.
- 20% savings and extra debt payments — emergency fund, goals, paying debt down faster.
Example: on a monthly income of 1,000, aim for about 500 on needs, 300 on wants and 200 into savings.
When the numbers do not fit
In an expensive city or on a low income, needs can take 60% or more. That is not failure. Keep the order of priority: cover needs, then save something, then spend on wants. Even 5% to savings builds the habit. Adjust the split to something like 60/25/15 and revisit it as your income grows.
Track it in SpendFlow
- Group your categories into needs, wants and savings so each is easy to total.
- Set a monthly budget on each spending category and watch the progress bars.
- At month end, open the overview and compare the totals with your targets.
Tip: Review once a month, not daily. The rule works because it is easy to keep.
